Tithe barn

PROVINS

Dating from the 13th century the Tithe Barn was used as a covered market.

Merchants from Toulouse are known to have rented it in 1223 for example.

The lower room was used to store goods, whereas the
first was a shop and the upper floor was inhabited.

This typical Provins house has a stone façade, a vaulted cellar with a cross-ribbed vaulting and capitals adorned with foliage.

In the 17th century, it was used as warehouse for the tithe - tax on the harvests - where from its current name.

Today, it houses a permanent exhibition: scenes and characters bring to life the main crafts and the merchant activities of this time.

You will discover: the Italian merchant, the Provins woollen cloth merchant, the money-changer, the Flemish merchant, the letter-writer, the wool techniques in Provins, the potter, the quarryman, the stone cutter and the parchment maker.

Thanks to the audioguided visit, open to everyone, playful but very complete, you will get all the answers on the Fairs of Champagne which took place in Provins.

      • Vous y découvrirez : le marchand italien, le marchand de drap de Provins, le changeur, le marchand flamand, l'écrivain public, les métiers de la laine, le potier, le tailleur de pierre, le carrier et le parcheminier.
